What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a regulated, primary health care system that uses manual, non-invasive methods to treat a wide range of problems.

Although the focus of osteopathic treatment is on the musculoskeletal system, osteopaths also deal with issues affecting the digestive, circulatory and nervous systems.

Osteopaths use visual assessment and a gentle hands-on approach to diagnose problems, paying special attention to the way your body moves. The treatment combines, massage, movement and manipulation, focused on rebalancing the structure and function of the body. There’s also a strong emphasis on providing practical advice about lifestyle, work and ergonomics to help prevent problems in future.

Osteopathic treatment aims to relieve pain, improve function and promote healing. It takes a holistic view of the body, considering all possible factors that could be contributing to a specific complaint.

Every registered osteopath trains for 4-6 years and undergoes over 1,000 hours of training in osteopathic techniques – resulting in an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and the musculoskeletal system.

Do I need a referral?

There’s no need for a referral when visiting an osteopath at Freedom Care Clinics. However, you may want to let your doctor know so that your medical records are kept up to date.

With your permission, your osteopath may forward details of your care to your doctor. It’s also possible to request
a letter for your employer if required.

The only time a referral might be necessary is if you plan to use private medical insurance such as, AXA, AVIVA, WPA, Vitality or BUPA.
