  • Fungal nail infection (‘nail thinning’)
  • Corns & calluses
  • Hard Skin
  • Dry, cracked heels
  • Bunions
  • Gout
  • Sports injuries
  • Problems caused by medical conditions such as diabetes

What is the difference between chiropody and podiatry?

There is no difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist, however, podiatry is a modern term adopted in the UK and elsewhere to reflect treatment advancements and changes in regulations within the profession. All podiatrists and chiropodists are fully insured and regulated.

How is Treatment Provided?

The treatment you receive will depend on the symptoms and the diagnosis made by the podiatrist. During your first appointment, our professional practitioner will ask about your medical history, as well as inquire about your current symptoms. After the exam, the chiropodist will then provide you with a diagnosis and treatment options. They’ll discuss the treatment with you, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the treatment. Our podiatrist will not treat any condition without your permission.

Treatment options may include:

  • Biomechanical, gait analysis and orthotics to assess and treat pain in feet, ankles, knees, hips or lower back caused by the way you move.
  • Cutting and shaping nails may include thinning nails that are thickened, ingrown, or otherwise problematic.
  • Acupuncture & Dry Needling for common foot conditions
  • General foot skincare includes the removal of corns, calluses, and treatment for cracked heels.
  • Identification and treatment of verruca’s if these are present.
  • Nail surgery may be done for ingrown toenails

How Can a Podiatrist Help?

Foot health issues affect the whole body. For instance, if your feet are painful for any reason, they can cause changes in the way you walk and stand. This may lead to issues in other areas of your body too, especially common is referred issues in foot, ankle, hip and lower back.

A highly qualified professional podiatrist will work to correct issues you may be having with your feet. Our podiatrists and chiropodists can remove verruca corns and calluses; these may be unattractive or painful. They can supply orthotics (more information regarding orthotics here) or customised insoles and help with overuse injuries such as Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis. They can even help you with arch supports to ease the pain caused by flat feet. If you have heel pain, a consultation with a podiatrist will be useful to you.

Our podiatrists and chiropodists put the emphasis on prevention, so they can offer guidance on the proper care of your feet. This can help you avoid some of the most common foot problems and keep your feet healthy.

Podiatrists can also help diagnose biomechanical issues that may be caused by the way your muscles function, or the way your joints are aligned. Poor alignment can lead to problems with your ankles, hips, and even your lower back. With a podiatrist’s help, you may be able to treat and avoid some of these issues in the future.

Can I See A Chiropodist On The NHS?

Yes, possibly. This will depend on the health issues you’re experiencing. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended that foot-care services for long-term conditions such as diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, and rheumatoid arthritis should be made available to NHS patients.

However, if your condition isn’t affecting your health or mobility, then you may need to pay for the chiropodist’s services on your own.

Can I See A Chiropodist Privately?

Yes, if free NHS treatment isn’t available, then you can see a chiropodist, but you will be responsible for paying the bill.

How To Make Sure A Podiatrist Is Qualified?

A chiropodist must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can use their website to see if the chiropodist is registered.

You can also check to see if the chiropodist is a member of one of these organisations:

  • British Chiropody and Podiatry Association

  • The Royal College of Podiatry

  • The Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists

Swift Microwave Technology.

State of the art treatment for Verruca and Wart treatment.

Swift is the latest and most effective evidence-based technology for the removal of verruca and warts on the feet or hands. If you have been struggling to remove stubborn warts or verruca; Swift technology can help to destroy them in a just a few treatments.

Initially your podiatrist will remove some of the overlying hard skin on the verruca. A probe is then held in contact with the skin, and the treatment application of microwave energy deep within the verruca  lasts a few seconds. This is then repeated by your clinician multiple times until the desired energy is delivered to the centre of the verruca or wart. Discomfort varies from patient to patient, but most people report the sensation similar to a pain from an injection or scratch lasting 2 – 3 seconds then quickly resolving. There is no need for dressings or anaesthetics.

Most patients leave without pain and with no need for dressings. In some case’s the area may feel tender, but will not prevent you from going about your daily activities.

As everyone’s response is different it is hard to predict, however most cases will require three treatments. In some cases, you may need more than three sessions (these are usually 4 weeks apart depending on the response). Your podiatrist will discuss this with you and devise the best plan.

Treatment fees are £120 per appointment when paid for individually. Or a package of 3 appointments can be paid for in advance for £300 (£100 per appointment)

Currently, Swift is regarded as one of the most effective treatments for verruca and warts. However, no treatment has a 100% success rate and other treatments are available such as cryotherapy and strong acids.

The majority of patients with verruca and warts are suitable for treatment with this technology. However, your podiatrist will undertake a thorough assessment in advance and decide if Swift is the best option for your care.

Precautions to treatment with Swift include; Presence of metal in the foot or ankle, use of a cardiac pacemaker, neuropathy or circulatory issues, immunosuppressed individuals, young children, patients with a low pain threshold.
