What does TMJ (Jaw) dysfunction mean?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located in front of the ear and connects the jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull. This joint allows for the up-and-down, front-and-back, and sideways movement of the jaw. Between the mandible and the temporal bone lies an articular disc, which facilitates smooth jaw movement. Surrounding ligaments and muscles provide stability and support, much like other joints in the body. However, issues with any of these structures can lead to pain or discomfort in the jaw.

To identify the underlying causes of your symptoms, your Osteopath will conduct a comprehensive examination. This includes discussing your overall health and medical history, as well as evaluating the movement of your jaw and spine. Osteopathy treatment will be tailored to your specific needs, with the goal of relieving discomfort and restoring mobility. Treatment involves hands-on joint mobilisation, soft and deep tissue massage, direct and indirect myofascial release, and high-velocity techniques. Alongside manual therapy, the practitioner may provide lifestyle and ergonomic advice, as well as to support your recovery.
