What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy or physio, is a holistic form of healthcare treating a range of issues from sports injury, postural pain, and muscle and joint conditions, to neuromuscular, cardiovascular and respiratory problems.

The aim of physiotherapy is to restore normal movement and function in the body through corrective techniques. These techniques help to rehabilitate the function of muscles, joints and soft tissue structures which have been affected by injury, illness or disability. Physiotherapists also offer preventative healthcare and lifestyle advice to keep you from further problems.

Why is Physiotherapy Useful?

Physiotherapy can help anyone, at any age, who has a medical condition that limits their ability to move and function. In fact, depending on the medical condition, physiotherapy can help a person regain their previous level of functioning, become fitter, and more.

Physiotherapy helps: –

Reduce pain: physiotherapy techniques can help reduce or even eliminate pain in some cases. It also works to restore muscle and joint function and tries to prevent the pain from coming back.

May help you avoid surgery: physiotherapy can also be helpful for some conditions that may require surgery otherwise. This type of treatment may be recommended before surgery and may even be enough to restore function and movement.

Sometimes physiotherapy is also done before surgery to help you become stronger with the goal of making your recovery faster post-surgery.

Improve movement: physiotherapy can make it easier to stand, walk and move. Exercises for strengthening and stretching can help you regain the ability to move easier. Assistive devices such as cranes or crutches may also help.

Recovery after a stroke: physiotherapy can also help someone recover after a stroke. When someone has a stroke, they may lose some function and movement in parts of the body. Physiotherapy can help strengthen these areas, including gait and balance. Physio can also help a patient regain some or most of their independence after a stroke, too.

Sports Injuries: physiotherapists can work with you to create a recovery and prevention exercise program to help you regain strength and mobility after a sports injury.

Manage issues related to age as we age, our bodies may develop such problems as arthritis and osteoporosis. We may also need joint replacements. Loss of balance is another common issue as we age, putting us at risk for falls. Physiotherapists can help older patients recover from joint replacement surgeries, regain strength and balance, and help to manage painful conditions such as arthritis.

These are just a few of the conditions that a physiotherapist can treat. For more information, simply get in touch with our friendly and professional team today.

What To Expect At Freedom Care Clinics Physiotherapists Leeds?

On your initial appointment your Physiotherapist will listen and ask questions about your presenting complaint, your overall health, and other medical care you may be receiving. This information will be recorded in your records and is kept completely confidential.

After taking a case history the Physio will perform an examination. They may ask you to do simple movements and stretches and observe how your body moves, along with your posture. The Physiotherapist will also make note of any areas that are inflamed, painful, or having another issue. They will use their hands to examine your joints, tissues, and ligaments.

Following the examination, your Physio will discuss your diagnosis, and if required formulate a plan for resolving your issue.

You may be offered a range of Physiotherapy treatment options including spinal and joint manipulation, manual therapy, stretching, dry needling acupuncture, electrotherapy such as Shockwave Therapy and Medical Laser Therapy, and most importantly specific exercises and activities to build strength and provide long-term results.

Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a Physiotherapist?

No, Physiotherapists can work as autonomous healthcare providers in the UK therefore a doctor’s referral is not necessary. However, it is recommended that your doctor be informed that you are receiving Physiotherapy treatments. This way your medical records will be complete and contain information that could be helpful in the future. Your Physiotherapist may sometimes forward details of your care to your doctor, with your permission. It’s also possible to request a letter for your employer if required.

If you plan to use private medical insurance ((AXA, AVIVA, WPA, Vitality or BUPA) for your physiotherapy treatment a GP referral is sometimes required.

  • Osteopathy: our experienced, registered osteopaths are able to treat a wide range of health issues from soft tissue injuries to digestive and circulatory problems. Osteopathy is a primary health care system that can help with the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions. Our osteopath will also provide you with practical advice on your lifestyle, workplace ergonomics, and more.
  • Sports massage: if you’ve suffered a painful sports injury, we can help. Treatment generally involves a variety of massage methods to help heal a current injury or even prevent future injuries.
  • Acupuncture: this is an ancient treatment, that first came from China over 500 years ago. Modern practitioners use acupuncture once your condition has been diagnosed. The process involves inserting fine needles into the skin with the aim of stimulating sensory nerves and muscles in the body. Acupuncture is fast becoming a widespread practice in the UK, backed by a growing number of studies that prove its effectiveness.
  • Low level laser therapy also known as cold laser or LLLT, low level laser treatment therapy is used to aid tissue repair, nerve regeneration and bone formation. It’s often used as an alternative to acupuncture and is used to speed up the healing process for fractures and soft tissue injuries.
  • Extracorporeal shockwave therapy: this is a new way to treat pain. Shock waves are audible high-energy sound waves, which have been used to disintegrate kidney stones. However, they are also being used to treat painful areas of the body, increase the healing process, stimulate metabolism and improve blood circulation.
  • We also provide virtual video appointments, back fit classes, yoga, and nutrition therapy
