Lymphatic drainage & Lymphedema treatment
Our experienced physiotherapists in Leeds and Manchester offer lymphatic drainage and lipoedema treatment. This is beneficial for patients suffering with swelling and fluid retention that typically affects mainly arms and legs but can involve any part of the body. Stagnation of fluid is often related to post-surgical complications, loss of mobility, secondary effects of cancer, diabetes, kidney and cardiovascular issues and rheumatic conditions. Lymphatic drainage treatment at Freedom Care Clinics is carried out by certified and registered physiotherapists and expert clinical massage therapists.
In addition to visibly reducing swelling, this treatment may also contribute to immune system health, improved general circulation and improved cell metabolism.
What is lymphatic drainage treatment?
The lymphatic system has a key role in our body’s immunity and is also responsible for transporting excess fluid & toxins back into our cardiovascular system to be eliminated. There are approximately twice as many lymphatic vessels than blood vessels throughout the body. Unlike our cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system does not have its own pumping mechanism (like the heart) and relies on muscles and changes in internal body pressure to create fluid movement.
Lymphatic drainage treatment is a specifically designed technique to provide a manual pumping effect of lymph fluid.
How is treatment performed?
Lymphatic drainage is a gentle hands-on treatment involving specific massage techniques, compression garments & bandages, joint mobilisation and self-care advice.
Prior to starting treatment, your clinician will take an in-depth case history and perform a physical assessment – this may involve taking measurements.
How many treatments are necessary?
The number of required appointments and duration of care varies depending on the cause of your edema. Lymphatic drainage treatment normally requires a course of appointments. You may need to attend once per week or multiple times throughout the week.
