Sciatica pain relief

Sciatica can be a debilitating condition which prevents you from carrying out activities in your day-to-day life. Whether you’re suffering from severe or mild sciatica, our practitioners in Leeds can help you, providing tailored sciatica treatment to manage your pain and making sure you receive the attention you need.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is the name for any pain you experience down the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, which runs from the back of the pelvis, down the buttocks and the back of the leg. Symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Back pain concentrated on one side
  • Pain in the buttock and back of the leg
  • Numbness
  • Tingling sensations
  • Muscle weakness
  • Burning pain in the lower leg or foot

Sciatic pain can range from mild to severe and can be caused by any number of underlying issues including:

  • A bulging or herniated disk pushing on the sciatic nerve
  • Tight Piriformis muscle
  • A back injury
  • Spinal Stenosis – narrowing of the part of your spine where nerves pass through
  • In rare cases, a growth (e.g. tumour or cyst) putting pressure on the nerve

Sciatica can also be caused by prolonged sitting or jobs that require you to twist your back or carry heavy loads. Whatever the reason or severity of your pain, our practitioners have a range of treatment options to help in easing sciatica.

How do we treat sciatica?

Sciatica treatment very much depends on the severity of the case. In order to create a tailored plan, your practitioner will carry out a full assessment to determine the severity of your problem and how it should be treated. If necessary, they may need to refer you for a scan and subsequent surgery.

If less severe, our practitioners will create a treatment plan for sciatica relief. Stretching, gentle manipulation and massage are all effective in easing sciatica and providing pain relief. They may also suggest some lifestyle modifications, dietary changes and gentle exercises for you to do at home to manage the pain. Ice and heat packs can also provide sciatica relief; your practitioner will be able to let you know how and where to apply these.
