Lower back pain treatment

Lower back pain is a common complaint that our practitioners in Leeds and Manchester are experienced and well-equipped to treat. Whether you are suffering from chronic or acute pain our professional team of osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists and physiotherapists are here to offer effective lower back pain relief and rehabilitation.

What is lower back pain?

Lower back pain usually presents itself as stiffness or muscle tension in the lumbar spine (anywhere between the buttocks and the lower rib cage). This is sometimes accompanied by pain down the back of the leg (known as sciatica). Around 8 in 10 people will suffer with lower back pain at some point in their life, and this pain can range from dull aching or niggles to acute pain that can prevent you from carrying out everyday activities.

Lower back pain can occur for a variety of reasons. Sporting injuries, heavy lifting or poor posture are common causes, but there can be underlying issues which our practitioners can help you get to the bottom of. The good news is that most patients can recover from lower back pain after a course of treatment.

Causes of lower back pain:

  1. Musculoskeletal or mechanical strain
  2. Gastrointestinal issues
  3. Gynaecological or renal problems

When suffering from lower back pain, you could experience any of the following symptoms:

  1. Aching or sharp pain between the top of the buttocks and lower rib cage
  2. Stiffness and restriction in movement
  3. Pain worsening when driving or sitting for long periods
  4. Possible radiation of pain into the buttock or down the leg

Treating lower back pain

Treating lower back pain will depend on your particular symptoms. A full assessment will always be carried out before we start treatment. During your assessment you’ll be asked about your medical history and the details of your current injury.

Lower back pain relief can be achieved with range of manual therapies including osteopathy, chiropractic, physiotherapy or massage. Our practitioners will use hands-on methods including joint mobilisation, deep tissue massage, soft tissue stretching and deep tissue release to treat your pain. They may also provide advice on posture, lifestyle, workstation set-up and exercise to help prevent further or recurring injury.

If the problem is severe, our practitioners may refer you for an MRI scan to discover the cause of the problem. This image will tell your practitioner whether referral to a specialist is required.
