Acupuncture Leeds

We understand you may have some questions about acupuncture, so we’ve put together the following information to help answer some of these questions. Contact our acupuncture Leeds team for more information!

What is Acupuncture Leeds?

Acupuncture is an alternative medical therapy that was developed in China. This is a therapy that’s been used for thousands of years to treat pain and other conditions.

The person who provides the acupuncture treatment is called an acupuncturist. An acupuncturist is a medical professional who uses a holistic approach to balance and maintain an individual’s health. They are trained to focus on the individual instead of the medical issue and their aim is to improve their patient’s wellbeing.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture uses very fine needles placed into the skin to stimulate sensory nerves, which are found under the skin and in the muscles. This causes the body to produce endorphins, which are natural substances that the body produces to relieve pain.

More than one session, in fact a course of sessions, is usually found to be more beneficial when it comes to relieving pain.

What Does Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture is used to treat many types of conditions including:

  • Chronic tension headaches
  • Migraines
  • Chronic pain (including neck pain)
  • Joint pain
  • Dental pain
  • Postoperative pain
  • Stress, anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Depression, mood swings
  • Weight loss, detox, appetite suppression
  • Skin problems (including acne, eczema, skin rashes)
  • Digestive issues (such as irritable bowel, colitis, constipation, diarrhoea, gastritis, heartburn, and more)
  • Upper respiratory issues (including allergies, sinusitis, sore throat, laryngitis, colds, and flu)
  • Lower respiratory issues (such as asthma and bronchitis)
  • Urinary and reproductive disorders (such as cystitis, menstrual cramps, irregular/heavy periods, infertility, menopausal symptoms)

Cosmetic Acupuncture Leeds

Another type of acupuncture we offer is called cosmetic acupuncture. This type of procedure is used to treat specific points on the face or body to help rejuvenate the appearance. This method is typically used on lines around the mouth, frown lines between the brows, on the forehead and the laughter lines around the eyes.

Cosmetic acupuncture can be effective to:

  • Eliminate fine lines
  • Reduce double chins
  • Reduce larger wrinkles
  • Life sagging jowls and eyelids
  • Tighten pores
  • Improve muscle tone
  • Reduce evidence of stress on the face
  • Reduce puffiness in the face and around the eyes
  • Reduce dark circles
  • Increase collagen production
  • Hydrate the skin
  • Promote a more radiant, youthful appearance
  • Improve overall health and wellbeing

We generally recommend 8-12 treatments for best results, followed up with monthly maintenance treatments.

How is Acupuncture Treatment Done?

An acupuncture session may from 20 minutes to an hour. The acupuncturist will start out by conducting an assessment of your health, taking a medical history and then conducting a physical exam. After this, the professional practitioner will develop a treatment plan, which will involve the insertion of acupuncture needles. Depending on your diagnosis, you may need several additional sessions, but this will vary.

The needles used for acupuncture are very fine and are inserted into specific places on your body. These are known as acupuncture points. You may sit or lie during the session, depending where the needles will be placed.

The acupuncturist will choose specific areas on your body to treat your health condition. They may choose several different points, depending on your symptoms.

The needles are inserted just under the skin, or into muscle if needed. They may be left in place for up to 30 minutes, though this will depend on your symptoms.

You may experience a dull ache or slight tingling when the needles are inserted. However, you should not feel a significant amount of pain. If you do, let the acupuncturist know right away.

Can Acupuncture Treat My Medical Problem?

The answer depends on your medical issue, but science has shown that acupuncture can be highly effective for many types of health problems.

When done by a professional acupuncturist, this treatment is extremely safe. In fact, this treatment is often much safer than treatment with some medications. Even so, some people are not comfortable with the idea of needles being inserted into their skin and they worry about possible side effects after treatment.

Are There Any Side Effects with Acupuncture?

When done by a professional acupuncturist, there may be a few mild side effects including:

  • Pain where the needles were inserted
  • Bleeding/bruising where the needles entered the skin
  • Drowsiness
  • Feeling of being sick or dizzy

Acupuncture is not recommended if you have haemophilia or you’re taking anticoagulant medications. So, be sure to talk with your GP and let the acupuncturist know before a treatment.

In addition, acupuncture is not advised for anyone who has a metal allergy or if you have an infection where the needles will be inserted.

How to Tell If an Acupuncturist is Qualified?

There is no regulation of acupuncture by law in England; however, you can be sure that your practitioner is a:

  • Doctor
  • Nurse
  • Acupuncturist registered with British Acupuncture Council or Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
  • Osteopath or Chiropractor
  • Physiotherapist

If they’re not one of these medical professionals, then check to see if your acupuncturist is registered with the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care.
