What is Joint Pain?

Joint pain or arthralgia refers to any pain, aching or discomfort in any of the body’s joints. Knee pain is the most common type of joint pain but it can affect any part of the body.

Although joint pain can affect people of all ages, it tends to be more common in adults. Symptoms of joint pain include swelling, stiffness, redness and warmth in the area.

Underlying Conditions

Joint pain and joint stiffness can be caused by trauma, repetitive motions or may be a result of the following underlying conditions:

Osteoarthritis (wear and tear of joints)
Bursitis
Inflammatory Arthritis (Rheumatoid, Psoriatic, AS etc)
Gout
Sprains
Strains

The most common type of joint pain – knee pain – can be a result of any number of issues. Often, knee pain is caused by a simple strain, meaning the soft tissues have stretched but are not permanently damaged.

Other possible causes include damage to the menisci (the rubbery tissue sitting between the upper and lower leg bones), tendonitis, torn ligaments and tendons, or more commonly in older people, osteoarthritis.

How Do We Treat Joint Pain?

Your joint pain treatment will very much depend on your individual symptoms. Firstly, your practitioner will carry out a full assessment to determine the cause of your pain. They will then put together a treatment plan tailored to you. This will include conservative treatment, including gentle adjustments and manipulation, deep tissue massage, deep tissue release and mobilisation.

They will also suggest ways you may be able to reduce and manage your pain with lifestyle modifications, pain medication and supplementation advice.

If your practitioner feels you cannot be managed conservatively, you will be referred to a consultant before being treated.
