What is irritable bowel syndrome?
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common, long term condition affecting the digestive system. The cause of IBS is unknown but it is thought to be linked to stress or triggered by eating certain foods. It is estimated to affect between 10% and 20% of the general population, is most common between the ages of 20 and 30, and is twice as common in women as it is in men
How do we treat IBS?
Our osteopaths and acupuncturists treat IBS in a variety of ways depending on your symptoms.
With osteopaths irritable bowel syndrome treatment will focus on mobilising the spine to improve the gut’s nerve function, along with massage and stretching of the lower abdomen area to improve blood supply to the gut.
Acupuncture treatment for IBS works to relieve pain and reduce stress. Treatment helps to regulate the motility of your digestive tract and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which triggers a ‘rest and digest’ response in your abdomen. A course of treatment can also help reduce general symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, which often perpetuates symptoms in IBS sufferers.
When should I book a treatment?
If you have symptoms of IBS, it’s always a good idea to make a visit to your GP first, especially if you are experiencing weight loss or bleeding from the rectum. Your doctor will likely carry out tests to rule out any other causes for your symptoms.
If you are suffering from less acute symptoms, or you have already had a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, our practitioners will be happy to help. In your initial appointment, they’ll take your medical history and assess your symptoms. They will then put together a treatment programme that is specially tailored to your needs.
