Acupuncture Awareness Week

The first ever Acupuncture Awareness week will take place from the 25th February until the 3rd March 2013. In spite of acupuncture’s ever increasing popularity there are still misconceptions surrounding this form of treatment.

This week aims to answer questions, provide information and enlighten patients on acupuncture treatments.

The theme of this year’s awareness week is sleep and relaxation and intends to educate people on how acupuncture can help.
What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing that focuses on the root cause of an illness rather than only the symptoms. In your initial treatment a full history will be taken about your current condition. Then a diagnosis will be made with a treatment plan, which may include lifestyle advice. During the acupuncture treatment fine needles are inserted into the skin in specially located points on the body. The practitioner may also use other techniques such as cupping and massage. Side effects are rare but will be discussed with you prior to your treatment.
Why choose acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been used safely for thousands of years and has as a growing scientific base. The World Health Organisation lists diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture has been proven, through controlled trials, to be an effective treatment some of these include:
• Depression
• Dysmenorrhoea
• Facial pain
• Headache
• Hypertension
• Knee, shoulder and low back pain
• Morning sickness
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Sciatica

Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages and is often used in conjunction with conventional medicine and other therapies. As well as being used to relieve pain and symptoms, acupuncture can aid with relaxation and a feeling of general well-being.
